We are officially three-quarters done with 2026 which also means the summer vibes are officially being replaced with more solemn and chilly frequencies. Therefore, it’s about time to have a look what we were up to in the last month of the summer over at the Uncut Gems Podcast and its associated Patreon channel.

In the last month of what we called the 80s Summer Solstice we moved all the way from Hong Kong back to Hollywood to discuss the cinema of arguably one of the more underappreciated genre auteurs, Walter Hill. We had a good look at his 80s directorial output (which is larger than the monthly programming would allow, so a few hard decisions had to be made) and we settled on a selection of movies that both interrogated his own personal proclivities and illustrated the breadth and scope of his voice. In so doing, we discussed his eponymous western The Long Riders, the swamp survival thriller Southern Comfort, the heightened musical Streets of Fire and a western-in-all-but-name actioner Extreme Prejudice. In addition, we tied into these conversations with a bonus recording where we talked about Hill’s biggest box office and critical hit, the 1982 48 Hrs.

Episode 294 (Southern Comfort)

Episode 295 (Streets of Fire)

Episode 296 (Extreme Prejudice)

Finally, as we have officially closed the Mike Nichols Marathon and we are going to start a new one in the new year, we decided to use the extra recording slot each month until the end of 2026 to talk about more iconic movies from the 1980s. Also, because it is becoming a show tradition to circle back to Arnold Schwarzenegger in September (and we have done so on a few occasions already), we decided to devote the two 80s Icons slots to Commando and Predator.

80s Icons 10 (Predator) (full episode on Patreon)
