As we barrel towards the inevitability of the new year, it’s always a good idea to go on that journey while listening to some quality banter. Therefore, how about we have a look at what we were up to in the month of October over at the Uncut Gems Podcast and its associated Patreon channel.
Having left the Summer Action Solstice in our rearview mirror, we transitioned into the final quarter of our 80s deliberations and embraced the spooky season with appropriate fervor. To this end, we chose to discuss a selection of the 80s adaptations of the works written by Stephen King (and we’d have needed a bit more than a month to go through all King adaptations from the decade), one of the foremost influences on the genre of horror at the time. We decided to talk about Cujo, Children of the Corn, Maximum Overdrive, Firestarter and Pet Sematary over on the main show and we paired these conversations with two more Patreon-exclusive debates: one about The Shining and the other about Stand By Me. We took a deep dive into the underpinnings of what made these stories great, how they translated to the screen, and how some of them took a life of their own. We also bickered about whether Cujo was unfocused or inspired, if The Shining could be a great movie but a terrible adaptation and if Pet Sematary could have been made better with more talented actors in front of the camera. Finally, to add a little bit of variety to our set of spooky selections, we chose to talk about A Nightmare on Elm Street as well.
