It has taken me a while, years even, to finally plant my flag on YouTube. At the end of the day, I do have a personal philosophy of doing only what feels right and when it feels right and for the longest time I couldn’t find an angle to use to evolve from writing and podcasting to creating videos on the subject of cinema. But I think I finally had an idea I wanted to follow.

The last thing I wanted to do was to turn my articles and essays into video essays with animations and snippets of movies playing over top of my voice while I scrambled behind the scenes to make sure the editing and production value were up to standard you could encounter on YouTube. Instead, I asked myself what it was that I liked to watch and decided on freewheeling talking head videos; essentially one-man mini-podcasts with a rudimentary plan. This way, I thought that I could use my written work not as a direct source of what my YouTube content was going to be about but rather as a source of inspiration where I could skim and hop between topics I raise in different essays, reviews and rants, or choose to dive deeper and ramble for longer on subjects that I felt would have been excessive to give more than a few paragraphs worth of attention in written format.

And so, Flasz on Film found its way onto YouTube with this overarching mission to complement and expand upon what I write, rather than to simply replicate it. And if I have to be perfectly honest, I think that this format of me just staring into the camera and trying desperately to sound as though I knew what I wanted to say would tally well with my writing philosophy where the process and authenticity of my voice matters more to me than making sure that the piece I write is structurally sound. And I won’t lie that an additional non-insignificant part of my reasoning is rooted in what I view as future-proofing. As AI-generated content floods the Internet, it has already become easy for all content (written articles, podcasts, video essays) to be replicated using AI tools. Therefore, in order to stand out in an ocean of listicle-style faceless slop narrated by lifelike voices, I chose to record myself and my frequently disorganized thoughts. What you see and hear is me, my authentic voice and opinions aided only by a short list of bullet points and the occasional visual aid.

Therefore, check out five longform videos I recorded over the last two weeks, head over to YouTube and subscribe to my channel and enjoy what I have created!

Also, check out my shorts over there, which are additionally available on TikTok! It’s a brave new world out there and it is one where I am now talking to the camera and trying to freestyle my way through various film-oriented topics. And there are some cool ones coming up too!
