The spooky month of October has come to a close, Amazon has begun sending out push notifications asking their customers if they are ready for Christmas shopping and Mariah Carey’s wailing can already be heard in the distance. Though, before we change gears it’s only right to look behind us one last time and sum up what we’ve been up to over at the Uncut Gems Podcast and its associated Patreon channel.
As it is tradition in many corners of the movie fandom, we devoted the month of October to a filmmaker who’s frequently associated with the horror genre and this year we chose the films of one Stuart Gordon. More specifically, we chose to focus on his earlier work, much of which was heavily inspired by the godfathers of American literary horror: H.P. Lovecraft and Edgar Allan Poe. We spent some time looking at Re-Animator, From Beyond, Dolls and The Pit and the Pendulum. Some of us have also balmed up on other Gordon movies in the process. We chose to tie into this series with a bonus Patreon show where we talked about Richard Stanley’s Color Out of Space, a recent Lovecraft adaptation starring Nicolas Cage.
Episode 245 (Re-Animator)
Episode 246 (From Beyond)
Episode 247 (Dolls)
Episode 248 (The Pit and the Pendulum)
Bonus Tie-in 53 (Color Out of Space) (full episode on Patreon)
The 50-30 Series also added another episode and this time we talked about the 1995 sleeper hit Se7en.
The 50-30 Series 10 (Se7en) (full episode on Patreon)
Last but not least, the Mike Nichols marathon also continued with a conversation about the 1988 Working Girl where you can hear two grown men discuss the merits and demerits of rom-coms and Harrison Ford’s office hygiene among other things.
