With June behind us and the sweltering heat of the Summer sun getting the best of us, it might be a good time to sit down and look back at what happened over the course of last month over at the Uncut Gems Podcast and its Patreon bonus content.

June turned out to be a big month for us, as we decided to celebrate Robert Altman’s centennial. In fact, the idea got so big that we began our June Altman conversations already in the last weekend of May… though this is mostly because Elaine May had only directed four movies and we thought that adding another Altman to the roster might be a good idea, especially since he had a rather sprawling filmography. Therefore, we chose to talk about the many ways in which Altman upset and subverted the canonical conceptions of genre and story telling by talking about McCabe & Mrs. Miller, The Long Goodbye, 3 Women, Short Cuts and Gosford Park. We devoted our bonus tie-in to Altman as well and we opted to talk about his biggest commercial success, M*A*S*H. But that’s not the end of it either because we thought it would be a good idea to Altmanize our ongoing 50-30 series for the month and hence we added another Altman conversation to the mix, which is his 1975 critical darling Nashville. In total, we spent the month of June talking about seven movies directed by Robert Altman and debate their merits.

Last but not least, we continued our Mike Nichols marathon with a conversation about The Fortune, which was a movie that sent Nichols into self-imposed movie exile for a number of years on the back of its stunning failure.
