With April behind us it is as good a time as any to pause for a second and have a look at what we have been up to over at the Uncut Gems Podcast and its Patreon bonus content. And there’s stuff to talk about.
In April, after a long string of action movies (from Guy Ritchie and Shane Black to Pete Berg, Antoine Fuqua and Andrew Davis), we decided to slow down a bit and take in the view. Therefore, we chose to discuss the cinema of Kelly Reichardt, a prominent Oregonian with a penchant for deliberately paced and character-rich explorations of humanity. We chose to talk about Reichardt’s collaborations with Michelle Williams, which are Wendy and Lucy, Meek’s Cutoff, Certain Women and Showing Up. But that’s not all. We also managed to talk to another longtime collaborator of this veteran of indie filmmaking. We sat down for a great conversation with Jon Raymond who is a novelist, short fiction writer and a screenwriter with whom Reichardt co-wrote three out of four of the movies we talked about in addition to The Old Joy, First Cow and Night Moves. In addition, we tied into these conversations with a great debate about Vagabond. We had a lot of fun podcasting this month and we hope it shows in the output below!
Episode 219 (Wendy and Lucy)
Episode 220 (Meek’s Cutoff)
Episode 221 (Certain Women)
Episode 222 (Showing Up)
Episode 222.5 (A Conversation with Jon Raymond)
Bonus Tie-in 47 (Vagabond) (full episode on Patreon)
The 50-30 series added another instalment where we talked about the 1995 space survival spectacle (and even this description became a subject of a brief argument), the Ron Howard-directed Apollo 13.
The 50-30 Series 04 (Apollo 13) (full episode on Patreon)
Last but not least, the Mike Nichols Marathon continued with a one-of-a-kind conversation about his fourth movie Carnal Knowledge. And the main reason why it was so special was because we were joined by the writer, filmmaker and playwright Neil LaBute to talk about this movie, how it informed his career and much more! Plus, this conversation is available to listen in full without the need to subscribe to our Patreon!
