Spring has finally made an appearance, which also means it is high time we had a nice look at what happened in March over at the Uncut Gems Podcast and its Patreon bonus content.
In March we decided to continue (and finish because in April our gaze will shift considerably) our uninterrupted run of action movies we began in Autumn 2024 with a whole month of movies directed by Andrew Davis. In fact, we almost managed to theme this month around the idea of Andrew Davis directing action heroes (Under Siege, Code of Silence, Chain Reaction, The Package and Collateral Damage), but this has been since a subject of debate because it seems opinions are divided on whether Gene Hackman qualifies as an action hero. Nevertheless, we spoke about a whole range of movies Davis directed, how they mostly relate back to his Chicago roots and how deep down he’s a massive fan of conspiracy thrillers. We also tied into this series with a Patreon-only podcast where we dissected (with some debate in there too) Davis’ biggest hit, The Fugitive.
Episode 214 (Code of Silence)
Episode 215 (The Package)
Episode 216 (Under Siege)
Episode 217 (Chain Reaction)
Episode 218 (Collateral Damage)
Bonus Tie-in 46 (The Fugitive) (full episode on Patreon)
The 50-30 series continued with a wonderful conversation on One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest and also happened to inspire me to write a little piece about how the characterizations Nurse Ratched and McMurphy might need reappraisal.
The 50-30 Series 03 (One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest) (full episode on Patreon)
Finally, our brand new director project where we trace the entire filmography of Mike Nichols continued with a truly outstanding conversation about his first major box office disappointment, Catch-22. Enjoy!
