October is now a distant memory, which means it is a good time to summarize everything we have been up to at Uncut Gems Podcast, which includes the main show and the bonus Patreon-exclusive series too!
The 2024 Spike Lee Marathon continued according to schedule, though it turns out we may have meddled with the chronology of our discussions… specifically because we are currently making our way through a period in Spike Lee’s career where it’s increasingly difficult to tell major joints apart from those minor ones. However, undeterred we decided to talk about Miracle at St. Anna over on our Patreon and on the main show we talked at length about his remake of Park Chan Wook’s Oldboy.
Episode 193 (Oldboy)
Spike Lee’s Major Joint 09 (Miracle at St. Anna) (full episode on Patreon)
Moving on to the main theme of the month, we jumped off John Wayne, who decided not to do westerns in the latter decade of his career onto talking about John Carpenter, a man who wanted to make westerns but was born into the wrong era. The suitably titled Carpentober series involved us looking at a selection of his movies spanning multiple decades, each carrying at least a modicum of a western legacy or nostalgic yearning within. Thus, we talked about Assault on Precinct 13, Christine, Vampires and Ghosts of Mars. In addition, to capitalize on the proximity of All Hallow’s Eve, we decided to devote the Patreon Bonus Tie-in show to a conversation about Halloween, which is available to listen there for absolutely free, together with a bunch of other legacy free-to-listen shows.
Episode 194 (Assault on Precinct 13)
Episode 195 (Christine)
Episode 196 (Vampires and Ghosts of Mars)
Bonus Tie-in 40 (Halloween) (full episode on Patreon)
Finally, we added another great conversation to our Kathryn Bigelow Marathon, where we talked about her sprawling epic with multiple false bottoms, Zero Dark Thirty. Also, feel free to check out my piece on Bigelow’s work I finally mustered the courage to pen. It’s a big one but it’s one of those essays I honestly think might be the one I’m most proud of.
