With September behind us, it is time to have a brief look at everything we have been up to over at Uncut Gems Podcast, both its main show and the bonus Patreon-exclusive series!

Our 2024 Spike Lee Retrospective continued unabated as we added another two great conversations to the catalogue, one where we discussed She Hate Me and another where we had some fun with Inside Man. Even though we are clearly working through what future historians will define as the difficult years in Spike Lee’s career, or maybe also years where Spike Lee got tired of typing and chose to direct other people’s scripts instead of his own, the movies we chose were more than enough to spark rather intriguing conversations in their own right.

Spike Lee’s Major Joint 08 (Inside Man) (full episode on Patreon)

For the main theme of the month we chose to talk about The Old Duke, the cinema of John Wayne from the tail end of his career, more specifically his non-Western movies. Boy, was this a choice! We talked about McQ, Hellfighters and Brannigan and we paired this big trio of movies with a double bill where we talked about the movie which earned John Wayne his only acting Oscar, True Grit. And just for the hell of it we thought it would be a good idea to talk about its sequel Rooster Cogburn.

Episode 191 (Hellfighters)

Episode 192 (Brannigan)

Bonus Tie-in 39 (True Grit and Rooster Cogburn) (full episode on Patreon)

Finally, we added another episode to our Kathryn Bigelow Marathon, which has now entered its final phase, also known as the Mark Boal era. We talked at length about Bigelow’s The Hurt Locker, the movie which got her to win big at the Oscars.
