Summer is slowly coming to a close and the time has come to round up everything we have been up to at Uncut Gems Podcast, both its main show and the bonus Patreon-exclusive series!
Traditionally, we added two conversations to our growing catalogue of Spike Lee episodes, one about Bamboozled and one about 25th Hour. We talked at length about Spike Lee’s complex satire and stylistically elevated moves towards upsetting the viewer, as well as the filmmaker entering the post-9/11 era and perhaps realigning his own perspective.
Episode 184 (Bamboozled)
Spike Lee’s Major Joint 07 (25th Hour) (full episode on Patreon)
In the month of August we decided to take a close look at movies Ben Stiller made in 1998, which includes an attempt at a prestige biopic (Permanent Midnight), a Woody Allen-esque dramedy about sex and relationships (Your Friends & Neighbors) and a proto-Soderberghian sleuth black comedy (Zero Effect), all in addition to his biggest hit, There’s Something About Mary, which is found on our Patreon. In addition, we also had the once in a lifetime opportunity to talk to the writer and director of Your Friends & Neighbors, Neil LaBute, who sat down with us to talk about his experience making indie movies in the 90s, his process, the magic of rehearsals and much more!
Episode 185 (Permanent Midnight)
Episode 186 (Your Friends & Neighbors)
Episode 186.5 (A Conversation with Neil LaBute)
Episode 187 (Zero Effect)
Bonus Tie-in 38 (There’s Something About Mary) (full episode on Patreon)
Also, in a special one-off engagement completely unconnected from the theme of the month, we spent nearly four hours celebrating my own birthday by talking about one of my personal favourites, James Cameron’s True Lies, which was a hoot and a half!
Episode 188 (True Lies)
Last, but not least, we continued our Kathryn Bigelow Marathon with a conversation about K-19: The Widowmaker, submarines, aka giant metal tubes filled with seamen, where we exercised our Russian accents and talked about prestige dramas, submarine movies as a genre and more!
