With July done and dusted, it’s a good idea to look back at what we have been up to recently over at the Uncut Gems Podcast, both its main show and the bonus Patreon-exclusive series!
Our 2024 Spike-a-thon continued unabated as we have found ourselves discussing two of Spike Lee’s 90s features we had yet to cross of our lists, Get on the Bus and Summer of Sam, the latter of which currently celebrates its 25th anniversary. Arguably, even though our Spike Lee project functions as its own thing, detached from any other themes we may be currently exploring on the show, both of those movies perfectly fit as a transition from our June conversations about distressed dads to what we chose next, which are conversations about men in crisis.

Spike Lee’s Major Joint 06 (Summer of Sam) (full episode on Patreon)
Thus, the stage was set for us to dig into movies about men going through things, in no small way helped by the fact Summer of Sam already deals with quite a lot of this matter. Therefore, we set sights on a trio of films that both fit the bill and also don’t end up discussed a lot. We chose to talk about The Art of Self-Defense, Shame and Bad Lieutenant and we also decided to pair these conversations up with a bonus Patreon-exclusive conversation about the 1999 Fight Club.
Episode 181 (The Art of Self-Defense)
Episode 182 (Shame)
Episode 183 (Bad Lieutenant)
Bonus Tie-in 37 (Fight Club) (full episode on Patreon)
Finally, our 2024 Kathryn Bigelow Marathon continued with a conversation about this filmmaker’s least known movie, The Weight of Water.
