April 2024 is now behind us, so it is now tradition to look over what we were all up to over at Uncut Gems Podcast and the associated Patreon channel.

Traditionally, we began our monthly deliberations by stopping over for a pair of great conversations about two more Spike Lee joints. This time we talked about Jungle Fever on the main show, which turned out to be a surprise gem, as well as Lee’s prestige biopic of Malcolm X.

The main theme we chose the month related to movies about people who chose to leave society behind and live off the grid… tangentially related to our March Spring Clinging series where we talked about people with a different kind of attachment issues. Over the course of the month we talked about William Friedkin’s underrated The Hunted (and I also penned a short piece inspired by that conversation), Captain Fantastic and Leave No Trace. We paired these conversations with a bonus podcast where we talked about Ted Kotcheff’s First Blood. This episode is available to listen for free in full over on our Patreon.

Episode 168 (The Hunted)

Episode 169 (Captain Fantastic)

Episode 170 (Leave No Trace)

Bonus Tie-in 33 (First Blood) (full episode on Patreon, listen for FREE)

Finally, we continued our year-long Kathryn Bigelow marathon as we talked about her early big hit Point Break, living vicariously through surfing bank robbers, difference between homoerotic undertones and a female gaze, meta-autobiographical storytelling and much more.
