February 2024 is history so the time has come to take stock of what we talked about over at the Uncut Gems Podcast, as well as on our associated Patreon channel.
Now that we have officially completed our 2023 Steven Soderbergh project (which bled into January, admittedly), we decided we wanted to apply the same methodology to a different filmmaker and chose Spike Lee as one of our 2024 heroes, whose entire feature output we will divide between our main show, where we’ll discuss Lee’s smaller joints, and our Patreon, where we’ll talk about his major joints. Now, there may be some debate as to whether some joints are more major than others on occasion, but nevertheless, this is what we decided upon. Therefore, we began our Spike Lee Joint-a-thon by talking about his debut She’s Gotta Have it and his sophomore School Daze.

We then hopped onto our main theme of the month – transitioning from a Neeson-piloted Non-Stop flight onto a different hijacked plane – and we chose to talk about 70s terror-in-the-sky thrillers; which also prompted us to dive deeper into the world of disaster movies. Consequently, on top of talking about Airport and its sequels, as well as The Hindenburg, between Randy and myself we generated enough momentum to write a few words on how the 70s disaster movies were de facto retirement homes for old Hollywood stars, how Airport 1975 was a metaphor for the studio system grappling with The New Hollywood, and even how Roland Emmerich’s 2012 was a post-pandemic prophecy.

Finally, we continued our newly launched Kathryn Bigelow Marathon by talking about her sophomore vampire western Near Dark.
