August has officially come to a close, so here’s a little summary of all we have been up to over the course of this month over at Uncut Gems Podcast.

We opened the month, as tradition now dictates, by catching up on our Soderbergh journey. Therefore, we talked about Haywire, as well as Magic Mike. We talked about Soderbergh’s panache when it comes to handling non-actors, his outlook on genre filmmaking and a whole lot more.

Episode 132 (Haywire) (Soderbergh Deep Cut)

Soderbergh Shallow Cut 08 (Magic Mike) (full episode on Patreon)

For the main theme, we chose to talk about a trio of porn-adjacent thrillers. In fact, as it turned out, the bulk of what we talked about ended up being more snuff- than porn-adjacent, but it was fun to dig into these weird oddities. We talked about Paul Schrader’s Hardcore, its 90s step-cousin 8MM and also a 1995 oddity titled Mute Witness. We also decided to pair up this theme with a bonus conversation about Paul Thomas Anderson’s Boogie Nights.

Episode 133 (Hardcore)

Episode 134 (8MM)

Episode 135 (Mute Witness)

Bonus Tie-in 25 (Boogie Nights) (full episode on Patreon)

Finally, we closed the month by checking in on our ongoing John Cassavetes Marathon where we talked about The Killing of a Chinese Bookie, a film that finally divided our opinions after month of nearly unanimous praise.
