New year, new endeavors! We have successfully launched into the maw of 2023 over at Uncut Gems Podcast and here’s a round-up of everything we recorded over the past month!
As you may or may not know, we have decided to make a few choice changes to the way the show is structured, or mapped out across the calendar year. First of all, we decided to embark on a massive project where – one by one – we will explore the cinema of Steven Soderbergh (with the small exception of Out of Sight which we talked about already as part of our Autumn Elmore Leonard collaboration with Nic’s own show Death by Adaptation. Therefore, we (mostly) conveniently divided Soderbergh’s filmography into more underrated features (so-called Deep Cuts), which will feature on our main show, and more renowned movies (aka Shallow Cuts), which will feature on our Patreon.
In January we started with Soderbergh’s auspicious debut Sex, Lies and Videotape (Shallow Cut available on our Patreon) and followed it up with Kafka as the Deep Cut.

Also, we decided to give the show some more predictable structure as far as mapping out episodes is concerned. Thus, each month will be given a flavour, to which three or four episodes will be tied together with a Patreon-exclusive Bonus Tie-in conversation. In the month of January we decided to talk about 80s Space Westerns.

Finally, as we have successfully wrapped our 2022 David Lynch Marathon, we chose to explore the cinema of a different auteur, who also conveniently happened to direct only twelve movies – John Cassavetes. Hence, we opened the project by talking about his groundbreaking debut Shadows, which helped to establish American independent cinema as we know it.
