In this episode of the show we discussed Alejandro Amenábar’s The Others, a supernatural horror film that came as part of the post-Shyamalan wave and eventually disappeared from the zeitgeist to become a pub quiz question or an entry in a listicle about films with cool twist endings.
Even though this time we did not spend four hours arguing over this, it’s an interesting specimen of a conversation because rarely do you get to witness first-hand how people’s opinion’s change in real time. We all started off fairly positive about the film and talked how great its tone and atmosphere were, how it eclipsed The Sixth Sense in many ways and how it had more in common with The Devil’s Backbone than anything else. We praised its inventiveness, Nicole Kidman’s performance, the structure… and then we started taking the movie apart and little by little we all realized how little staying power it had. It’s honestly amazing to listen to because I don’t think either of us had an idea where this conversation would lead us. So, give it a go and tune in to spend some two hours of your life listening to three guys slowly realizing their admiration for a horror movie from twenty years ago (doesn’t it make you feel old?!) is easily turned into something else.
Tune in and enjoy!
