With September behind us, it’s as good a moment as any to round up all activities over at the Uncut Gems Podcast and its Patreon bonus content that took place over the course of last month.
In September, we decided to transition closer to modern times after a couple of months spent mostly in the 1970s and we chose to talk about crime movies and police procedurals directed by one David Ayer. In a way, we have already touched on his work in our February conversations about Antoine Fuqua, as we discussed his Training Day, but now the time has come to look at Ayer’s work a bit more comprehensively. Thus, we talked about Harsh Times, Street Kings, Sabotage and The Tax Collector. We capped these chats with a Bonus Tie-in podcast where we discussed Ayer’s arguable zenith in this space, End of Watch. Across all those conversations you can hear us talk about Ayer writing what he knows, seeking emotional authenticity, finding Shakespeare-esque themes in stories about hoodlums and gangsters and manufacturing entertainment of the kind that used to be popular many years ago.

Finally, the Mike Nichols marathon continued with Biloxi Blues, the last collaboration between Nichols and Neil Simon in which the filmmaker tried to take Simon’s wartime memories for a spin… and happened to put together something that could have been retitled as Diet Metal Jacket.
